Best AI writing tools under $50/mo for freelancers
A draft buying framework for freelancers who want an AI writing stack around $50 a month: Rytr, ChatGPT Plus, and when Writesonic or Jasper sit outside the cap.
Draft · Updated September 25, 2026 · 3 min read
Draft. This is a buying framework. A hands-on test would name the dates and the work. Pricing and plan names need a check on the vendor site before you purchase.
Tools named in this draft
- Placeholder link
Rytr
Low-cost short-form drafts and tones for freelancers who bill by the piece.
- Official pricing

If a tracked link on this page is connected later, SoloStack may earn a commission. This draft is a budget framework. It is a write-up of public positioning and published list prices, and it is ready for a price check before anyone buys.
The cap is about $50 a month for the writing tool itself. That number is a freelancer constraint: one client retainer, or a few blog posts, has to cover the software. A tool that only makes sense on a team plan fails the test even when the demo is impressive.
How to use the cap
Count the plan you would actually keep after the trial. Annual billing can hide a higher monthly equivalent, and “unlimited” often means a fair-use ceiling. Add tax if your country charges it on SaaS. Leave room for an SEO tool later; this guide is only the writing line. The publish pipeline is where drafting meets optimization.
Prices below are drafting notes from public pricing pages around September 2026. Confirm them on the vendor site. Plan names move.
| Tool | Job it is built for | Draft budget note |
|---|---|---|
| Rytr | Short client copy, tones, quick variants | Free tier, and a paid plan often cited well under $50 |
| ChatGPT Plus | General drafting, editing, research help | Commonly about $20 a month |
| Writesonic | Marketing drafts and, on current packaging, AI-search visibility | Published entry plans have often sat above $50 |
| Jasper | Brand voice and campaign workflows for teams | Published seat prices have often sat above $50 |
Rytr, when the work is short
Rytr is the budget shelf: a free allowance, preset tones, and a paid plan aimed at solo creators. Use it for product blurbs, email openers, social variants, and first passes on service-page sections you already understand.
It is a weak place to invent a client’s expertise. The output needs your facts, your examples, and a read-aloud edit. If the assignment is a reported article or a technical post, Rytr is a sketch tool, and the thinking still belongs to you.
Treat the Rytr link as a placeholder until a tracked URL is configured. The button on that page will say so.
ChatGPT Plus, the flexible $20 line
ChatGPT Plus is the tool most freelancers already know. Around $20 a month it is a general assistant: outlines, rewrites, counterarguments, and “make this sound like my sample” passes. SoloStack links to the official pricing page. That link is not an affiliate link.
Plus earns a place under the cap because the same subscription covers writing and the rest of the business: proposals, call summaries, and spreadsheet formulas. It does not ship a content score, a SERP brief, or a brand kit. Those are separate products, covered in the Surfer and Frase comparison.
A practical rule: if you can describe the reader, the offer, and the proof, Plus is enough to draft. If you need the software to decide the outline from the search results, you are shopping for an SEO tool, and that bill is extra.
When Writesonic and Jasper miss $50
Writesonic’s public packaging has moved toward AI search visibility, with article generation metered by plan. Entry prices discussed in 2026 roundups often start near $79 a month, which is over this cap. Jasper’s published seat pricing has often started near $59 a month on annual billing, also over the cap, and the product is aimed at brand and campaign workflows.
Both can be the right second purchase when a retainer requires a shared voice, a client login, or a marketing workflow you repeat every week. They are poor first purchases when you are still proving that clients will pay for the writing.

A stack that stays under the cap
For most solo writers the draft stack is:
- ChatGPT Plus for the flexible draft and edit.
- Rytr only if you want cheap, repeatable short-form templates and you already like its tones.
- A separate SEO tool only after you publish often enough that briefs save real hours. See the pipeline guide before you add one.
That pairing is often near $20–$30 before an optimizer. Adding Surfer or a higher Writesonic plan is a different budget conversation.
What this draft leaves out
There is no ranked winner, no “we used these for six months,” and no earnings claim. Output quality depends on the brief you bring. If two tools are close, pick the one you will open on a Tuesday, and cancel the other before the annual renewal.
